Did you know…

Shortcuts to your favorite websites can be created on your desktop by simply selecting the entire link in the address bar (chrome) or selecting the icon left of the link in the address bar (internet explorer), and dragging that to your desktop.

This edition of Accurate Networks Tech tips will explain a few items related to the creation of these website (URL) shortcuts.

Creating URL Shortcuts in Chrome vs Internet Explorer

Creation in Chrome:

Due to the way Chrome creates these shortcuts, it is unable to include the websites FAVICON in the shortcut it creates.  As a result, shortcuts created in chrome will display a generic Chrome icon.

What is a FAVICON?  A favicon (pronounced "fave-icon") is a small, iconic image that represents your website. Favicons are most often found in the address bar of your web browser, but they can also be used in lists of bookmarks in web browsers shortcuts and feed aggregators

Creation in Internet Explorer:

Internet Explorer has the ability to store a website’s FAVICON with any shortcut that is created.  See example below:

Final Words

Regardless of what browser you have set as your default (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera), website shortcuts created with Internet Explorer will include the logo image that is most identifiable with that particular website.
